In Germany, not just any beers are served at Oktoberfest - the festive brews are rather specific, and quite different from American "Oktoberfest beers."

St. John the Evangelist parishioner Greg Schilling founded the annual festival to celebrate his German heritage and the German immigrants who originally founded the church. Attendees are invited to celebrate their German descent or just be German for the day. Some revelers dress up in traditional German lederhosens or drindls.

The festival takes place in Munich every year, at Theresienwiese, a 100-acre fairground space in the city’s Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district, near the Old Town. Believe it or not, Oktoberfest isn’t actually considered a beer festival in Germany – instead, it’s a folksy celebration popular among families as well as those after a stein or two.
